WHO AM I?
Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Zurem Meru. I'm an illustrator and graphic designer based in Wellington, New Zealand.
Illustrating has always been a passion since I was a kid. I've been drawing since I can remember! My illustrative style is usually inspired by many things such as the symmetry, textures, muted tones and overlays found on 60's illustrations, the silence of pastel colours, the colours and minimalism of Scandinavian interior design, and the texture and carefree feel of watercolour and handwriting. As much as possible, I try to incorporate these qualities into my drawings and make it more unique. At the same time, I am also developing my illustrative style and skills because, after all, there is always room for improvement, right?
When I illustrate, I would choose between two methods. One is the traditional method where I use materials like watercolour, gouache, markers, fineliners, etc. Another method is digital where I use Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and of course, my trusty Wacom Tablet. But whatever the method I use, it always starts with pencil and paper.
Graphic design became an interest back in 2011 and since then, I have decided to pursue it as a career. I graduated from Yoobee School of Design with a Diploma of Computer Graphic Design back in 2012 and a Diploma of Digital Media Advanced back in 2013. I gained more experience in the industry working as an in-house/freelance graphic designer for a Wellington-based design agency called HEYSMARTYPANTS. Afterwards, I got a job as a Junior Graphic Designer at a local lighting shop called LED R US.
My design style is usually inspired my minimalistic designs. I like using pastel colours and the classic black and white as much as possible. Photography has always been an interest and I always look for really good photos to incorporate into my designs. If I can't find any, then I'll take some photos of my own instead. Hand-written text is also one of the things I like to include to my designs. I think the unexpected elements of real handwriting gives a design a more personal touch and in a way makes the design more "human".
Creativity has always been a part of my everyday life and I'm excited to see what improvements I can make now and in the future.
